Community is invited to attend free event focused on how to avoid financial scammers

SAN DIEGO, CA (May 11, 2016) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is a proud sponsor of the County of San Diego’s “Don’t Get Hooked” events program aimed at providing citizens tools to avoid financial scams. County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus will lead the next forum, happening May 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Poway Community Park Auditorium, located at 13094 Civic Center Drive in Poway. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. and the event includes a complimentary breakfast.
The speaker lineup will include victims of scams, Detective Maureen Perkins of the Sheriff’s Department and Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood, who is an expert on elder abuse and financial crimes. Experts from the County’s Aging and Independent Services, and representatives from San Diego County Credit Union, will also be onsite to provide advice and answer questions.
According to the County, scammers view seniors as easy prey and are targeting a growing number of them. The County handles about 9,000 cases of elder and dependent abuse annually, many of which are fraud-related, which is why Supervisor Jacob and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis teamed up in 2015 to bring more attention to the issue of senior scams and to offer advice through “Don’t Get Hooked,” a public awareness campaign.
