Coosa Valley Credit Union offering to replace tattered flags
ROME , GA (June 1, 2016) — The Coosa Valley Credit Union is working to replace tattered or worn American flags in Floyd, Bartow and Polk counties in time for Independence Day.
From now through July 4 — a period that includes Flag Day on June 14 — the credit union will be on the lookout for worn out or damaged flags that need replacement and is seeking help from the public in identifying them.
Robert Smyth, assistant vice president at the credit union, said his company has replaced more that 100 flags in the two previous years.
Smyth said he was at a convenience store on Martha Berry Highway one day a couple of years ago and noticed the flag at a neighboring business was faded almost beyond recognition. “It hit me,” he said. “I wondered what it would cost to replace that flag. Turns out the cost isn’t huge.”
He said the average 3-by-5 flag, bought in bulk, is about $40. Smyth said the project may have cost the credit union as much as $2,000 in each of the past two years.

He took the idea to the administration at the credit union, and they liked the idea.
“This is one of our favorite yearly projects, but we need the public’s help,” Smyth said in a press release. “We will replace that flag (up to a six-foot by 10-foot size) absolutely free.”
Smyth said CVCU also works with the Exchange Club of Rome and local veterans groups to properly dispose of the old flags.
“For what it costs and for what you’re doing for the community, it really is a pretty good investment,” Smyth said.
