ALBANY, NY (October 31, 2014) -- The Credit Union Association of New York’s Young Professionals Commission hosted a series of “cash mobs” earlier this month, which netted more than $2,500 for locally owned businesses throughout New York state. Cash mobs are groups of individuals who gather to make purchases at local businesses in a show of community support.
The events were held Oct. 16-18 in recognition of International Credit Union (ICU) Week; this year’s theme was, “Local Service. Global Good.”
From Buffalo to New York City, nearly 150 credit union supporters—including credit union CEOs, management, staff and members—participated in the 12 separate events. Each cash mob group left behind cards that expressed thanks on behalf of the state’s credit unions and their members.
Events were held at: The Pour House in Albany; Holmes Plate in Corning; Skippy’s Vintage Toys & Flea Market in Hamden; The Market at I-Square in Irondequoit; Main Street Trading Co. in Macedona; Raspberry’s Frozen Yogurt in Newark; the Theatre District Shopping Court in New York City; Research & Design in Orchard Park; Stone's Candy and the Water Street Café in Oswego; Banker Orchards in Plattsburgh; and Riverview Orchard in Rexford.
“The Young Professionals Commission truly captures the meaning and spirit of the credit union movement,” said CUANY President/CEO William J. Mellin. “Their statewide cash mob of initiative this ICU Week was a shining example of the local impact credit unions can have when they are united for a global good.”
The Young Professionals Commission is a group of 35-and-younger credit union employees and volunteers from across the New York state. The Commission is tasked with developing strategies to recruit, retain and advance younger adults within the credit union movement
