CUNA launches credit union election tracker

CUNA elections page will track credit union-supported elections throughout 2020

WASHINGTON, DC (March 9, 2020) — Credit Union National Association (CUNA) is launching a 2020 election tracker to follow the success of CUNA supported candidates throughout the primary and into the general election.

Tracking candidates supported by the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), the site features an interactive map that allows users to see state-by-state which candidates credit unions support, and the status of their primary race.  The page also features a full list of supported candidates across the country, and will be updated as support is announced.

“Because elections have such an outsized impact on their members’ well-being, credit unions take seriously their role in the electoral process,” said CUNA Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Political Action Trey Hawkins. “This resource will allow CULAC donors and other credit union stakeholders to see CUNA’s involvement in the 2020 elections in real time and track our success in electing officials who recognize the credit union difference in communities across the country”

Earlier this year, CULAC announced its intent to invest a record $7 million in the 2020 election cycle, and CUNA launched Credit Unions Vote, a resource for credit union members to find register to vote, find their local polling location, and engage in the political process. The credit union movement fosters an environment of community involvement and is encouraging members to make their voice heard with their vote.  According to recent data, 1 in 3 Americans are credit union members and 44% of registered voters belong to a credit union.

In the 2018 election cycle, over 380 credit union candidates received CUNA backing and were elected to the 116th Congress. This marked a 91% success rate on midterm election investments. Efforts from the trade group aim to create a voice for credit unions on both sides of the aisle.
