DCECU gives $8,400 to The Diaper Alliance through Great Lakes Loons partnership

Donation will help organization distribute more than 67,000 diapers locally

MIDLAND, MI (October 1, 2019)Dow Chemical Employees’ Credit Union has donated $8,400 to a local nonprofit organization as part of a partnership with the Midland-based Great Lakes Loons Minor League Baseball team.

As Presenting Sponsor of Loons wins in 2019, DCECU committed to donating $100 to The Diaper Alliance for each Loons regular-season victory. The alliance distributes diapers to partner agencies around the region to help ensure that local children have a healthy supply of diapers.

Every $100 helps the organization distribute 800 diapers, so the Loons’ strong 2019 performance and DCECU’s subsequent donation will equal 67,200 diapers – more than a month’s worth of diapers for the alliance, which distributes 65,000 diapers monthly.

DCECU Marketing Program Coordinator Teresa Cunningham recently presented the donation check to Diaper Alliance Treasurer Racell Clark and Board of Directors Member Audra Davis on behalf of the credit union. The $8,400 donation accounted for the 79 games the Loons had won prior to the originally scheduled Aug. 29 check presentation – which was postponed due to a lengthy rain delay of the game that night – plus an additional $100 for each of the Loons’ five remaining regular-season games between Aug. 29 and Sept. 1. The Loons ultimately finished the regular season with an 81-55 record; the team’s .596 winning percentage was the highest in the Midwest League.

“Signing on as the first-ever exclusive credit union partner of the Great Lakes Loons this season has afforded us some wonderful opportunities,” said DCECU President/CEO Dennis Hanson. “Being able to support The Diaper Alliance with every Loons victory definitely was one such opportunity – and with this being such a good season for the team, with more than 80 wins racked up, it also ended up being a very good season for The Diaper Alliance!”

Loons President and General Manager Brad Tammen agreed that the partnership was a tremendous success that will benefit many in the community.

“The opportunity to partner with DCECU and The Diaper Alliance on the ‘Loons Win’ campaign is truly a win-win for everyone involved,” he said. “Thankfully, this year’s team is one of the best we’ve ever had here in Midland. The fact that they have the second-most wins this season than any other team in our history means an even greater impact in the community than we ever could have hoped.”

When the partnership between DCECU, the Loons and The Diaper Alliance was announced earlier this year, now-retired Diaper Alliance Founder and Past Director Debi Keyes expressed gratitude for the exposure it would provide.

“We are so grateful for DCECU’s support in helping the Diaper Alliance grow,” she said. “We try to spend most of our funds on purchasing diapers, which doesn’t leave us much of a budget for marketing. This partnership gives us priceless exposure that will allow us to focus our resources on our greatest priority, while also raising awareness of who we are and what we do.”

In addition to the recent donation, DCECU has supported The Diaper Alliance throughout 2019 by volunteering with the organization. On three occasions, groups of DCECU employees have spent time repackaging thousands of diapers for The Diaper Alliance to distribute to its agency partners. One more group of employees will volunteer at the organization’s warehouse in November to round out the year.
