DCUC Conference: day one recap

NAPLES, FL (August 12, 2021) — DCUC officially opened their conference on Wednesday morning with an opening ceremony featuring a presentation by the local VFW Honor Guard and welcome from League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates.

This year’s DCUC Annual Conference celebrates the defense credit union difference, discusses the challenges in serving our nation’s military today, provides important legislative and regulatory updates, and features an increased emphasis on technology.

Wednesday morning began with two excellent presentations on technology and innovation. The first was an illuminating presentation by Keynote Speaker, Theresa Payton, the first female White House Chief Information Officer (CIO). She discussed top security threats, including automated account take over, business email compromise, and security and privacy issues, and ideas on how to mitigate them. Following Payton’s presentation, Filene Fellow Dr. Jeffrey Robinson took the stage to discuss what innovation is and how it can help credit unions meet challenges.

Throughout the day, DCUC welcomed both NCUA Vice Chairman Kyle Hauptman and Board Member Rodney Hood to the stage. Board Member Hauptman and Board Member Hood each provided brief remarks and engaged in conversation with Tony Hernandez, DCUC’s president/CEO, on important issues for credit unions with particular emphasis on issues that affect defense credit unions, such as the APO/FPO issue, DEI Initiatives, and pandemic response. Their remarks and conversations garnered lively audience participation and inspired ongoing conversations throughout breaks.

Other highlights throughout the day included VADM Kevin Donegan USN (Ret.) sharing stories from his military career that highlighted our nation’s greatest military strength, our service men and women, and Mindy Greenberg’s, Senior Product Manager at FIS, discussion of consumer wellness, alternative data, and how it benefits credit unions. The day concluded with the new Fintech Forum’s three rapid fire sessions that addressed how the pandemic is re-shaping of financial services industry.
