DCUC emphasizes importance of financial self-advocacy

WASHINGTON, DC (April 23, 2019) — The financial well being of our military community is a significant readiness issue. This is why it is important for our Defense Credit Unions to provide financial literacy education year around not just during April for National Financial Literacy Month.

Servicemembers and their families face financial challenges that are greater than their civilian counterparts. For the most part, military families live on a fixed income with little opportunity for additional income unless there is a deployment or relocation.

Military families recognize saving for the future, moving costs, military spouse unemployment, the uncertainty of military life, and the potential of future government shutdowns as financial obstacles. Anthony Hernandez, President and CEO of DCUC, shares tips with Military Home Life Radio on how federal employees and military families can prepare and protect your finances for the next possible government shutdown.

Defense Credit Unions have the opportunity and privilege to educate military families about budgets, developing dept-payment plans, managing credit, and saving towards financial goals.

Are military servicemembers and their families Fiscally Fit and Saving the Extra? We can help them learn to record and track their spending, reduce their expenses, and save the extra! Financial stress can affect the personal and family well-being, not to mention critically injure the effectiveness of mission readiness.

Use Financial Literacy month as an opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the year. Contact your local Defense Credit Union for financial literacy education and visit America Saves to take the pledge to reach your savings and debt reduction goals.
