DCUC is committed to military spouse and veteran employment
WASHINGTON, DC (October 12, 2018) — The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) recognizes the importance of supporting our military through military veteran and spouse employment. DCUC President/CEO Anthony Hernandez, a 25-year Air Force Veteran, emphasizes providing employment opportunities to military veterans and military spouses, starting with DCUC. Currently, 50% of DCUC employees identify as military veterans and/or military spouses.
Anthony Hernandez, President/CEO of DCUC stated, “Military families sacrifice and serve alongside their veteran servicemember. Nowhere is this more evident than in our military spouses who have unique skills and abilities. In fact, many military spouses have college degrees in addition to proven experience and are ready to work in building our defense communities. This talent is in plain sight!
My wife is a great example—smart, talented, educated, patriotic, and has a strong work ethic. As a result, DCUC’s employment strategy is largely shaped by her experiences, insights, and timely suggestions. DCUC is enriched by our military spouses who come to work every day and make us succeed.”
Military spouses face unemployment rates four times the national average and DCUC is committed to doing our part by assisting military spouses in securing meaningful careers and stands behind the Hiring our Heroes Hiring 100K Military Spouses initiative. Former Second Lady of the United States and Honorary Co-Chair of the Biden Foundation, Dr. Jill Biden, stated, “military spouses deserve the opportunity to build their careers and pursue their dreams, no matter where their family is stationed.”
Second Lady of the United States, Karen Pence, recently told an audience of Army military spouses “we know military life is not easy and that employment issues are one of the biggest challenges military spouses face” and announced a campaign to “elevate and encourage military spouses” during her visit to Fort Carson, CO on September 13, 2018.
DCUC supports the campaign launched by the Second Lady of the United States, Karen Pence, and encourages veteran and military spouse employment by its member credit unions, who are already huge proponents of military spouses given their integrated relationships to the military sphere. In addition to our hiring initiatives, DCUC sponsors the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education (AFCPE) symposium by providing five military spouses the opportunity to continue their financial counseling education. Financial counseling careers are highly portable and provide military spouses the opportunity to find employment at any military installation or in the civilian sector.
