Dirigo Federal Credit Union opens new Scarborough branch designed to deliver a modern, member-first banking experience

SCARBOROUGH, ME (February 12, 2026) |

Dirigo Federal Credit Union has officially opened its new Scarborough branch, marking the credit union’s fifth location and its first new branch expansion in decades. Designed and built in partnership with The Element Group and GTD Architects, the new branch reflects Dirigo’s continued investment in modern banking experiences and community-focused service across southern Maine.

Located at 424 Payne Road, the Scarborough branch was developed through a hybrid renovation and expansion of an existing multi-tenant building. When design work began, the structure had been largely gutted down to its framing, creating an opportunity to reimagine the space while strategically preserving portions of the original building to control costs and maximize long-term value.

Rather than a full teardown, the teams chose a selective demolition and expansion strategy, removing approximately one-third of the structure to allow for a new slab, increased square footage, and drive-up services. The remaining portions of the building were redesigned to support the branch and accommodate future tenants, creating an opportunity for long-term passive income.

“From the beginning, this project was about making a smart, sustainable investment that supports our members today and positions Dirigo for the future,” said Kevin C. Joler, Executive Vice President and CFO. “The Scarborough branch allows us to grow responsibly while delivering a modern, welcoming experience in a market where we continue to see strong momentum.”

The interior was designed to feel open, bright, and approachable. Vaulted Douglas Fir wood ceilings, large windows, and carefully selected modern fixtures bring natural light deep into the space, creating an environment that feels contemporary without losing warmth.

Inside the branch, Dirigo’s service model guided key layout decisions. A teller pod and interactive teller machines allow members to choose between self-service and personalized assistance. A welcome area with a coffee bar and a redesigned “power bar” provides space for members and staff to connect or work, reflecting evolving member needs and behaviors.

Private offices, a conference room, a large staff break room overlooking a pond and a future fountain feature, and a universally accessible quiet room were also incorporated to support both member service and employee wellbeing.

“We’re proud to support Dirigo Federal Credit Union as they bring a modern banking experience to Scarborough,” said Nate Baldasaro, co-founder of The Element Group. “Over the past eight years, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside their team, and it’s inspiring to see their continued investment in elevating the member experience and setting new standards for service across the communities they serve.”

The Scarborough branch reinforces Dirigo Federal Credit Union’s commitment to expanding access, embracing technology, and delivering spaces that reflect the values of the communities it serves.
