DuGood Federal Credit Union awards over $10,000 in scholarships

BEAUMONT, TX (May 5, 2016) — Providing scholarships for high school seniors and aspiring professionals – it’s just one way that DuGood FCU is helping its members achieve their dreams.

On Friday, DuGood presented eight $500 scholarships to:

Katelyn Barnhart – Lumberton High School
Kaitlyn Black – Lumberton High School
Chelsey Chaffin – Bridge City High School
TraVern Clark – Pharmacist and Phlebotomy Academy
Kira DeVillier – Vidor High School
Averie Mangioni – Port Neches-Groves High School
Bryana Simmons – Bridge City High School
Brailey Smith – Legacy Christian Academy

In January, DuGood issued a challenge.  Create a video highlighting the benefits of credit union membership. In return members could win a $500 scholarship.

The challenge had three main purposes: to give back to local students and aspiring professionals, educate participants about the credit union movement and to encourage greater engagement with millennials.

“This was a year of firsts for us.” Marketing Communications Specialist Rebecca Prince said.

“Our credit union has been giving away scholarships for many years.  But, this is the first year we accepted video applications exclusively.  The response was overwhelming!”

Not only did DuGood completely change their scholarship application process, it was the first time the credit union opened its scholarship giveaway to young professionals.

“When members speak up, it really makes a difference,” Prince said.

Longtime members TraVern Clark and her husband, Dyron, reached out to ask if the scholarship giveaway was available for young professionals enrolling in technical school.

“It made us realize we were leaving out a huge portion of our membership, and we just had to help.”

In addition to its video contest, DuGood also gives cash for college through their debit cards with Scholarship Rewards ™ and their Student Advisory Council at Lamar University.  Southeast Texas students have received over $ 8,000 over the past year.
