Emporia State Federal Credit Union ‘pays it forward’

EMPORIA, KS (October 16, 2015) — The Emporia State Federal Credit Union made a stop at Casa Ramos Thursday to hand out $10 gift certificates to patrons. The stop is part of a statewide effort by credit unions make a difference in each community.

During the lunch hour Thursday, the Emporia State Federal Credit Union gave away 100 $10 gift certificates. Bill Huth, Emporia State Credit Union loan officer, said the tour is a way to “share the philosophy of credit unions” and “pay it forward.”

Sharon Anderson of Douglass granddaughter Bayley Nipsel, a student at Emporia State University, were two Casa Ramos diners surprised by the visit from Emporia State Federal Credit Union.

“It was quite surprising to have a man come up and give me a gift certificate,” Anderson said. “He also answered some questions I had about credit unions.”

“Very nice,” Nipsel said. “I never heard they were doing this or anything.”

Emporian Tracy Edwards also received a gift certificate.

“We were very pleasantly surprised,” Edwards said. “Normally when you get someone handing out stuff on the street you don’t expect it to be money.”

Twenty credit unions across the state in Arkansas City, Atchison, Augusta, Clay Center, El Dorado, Emporia, Great Bend, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Manhattan, Marysville, Ness City, Mission, Newton, Norton, Topeka, Wichita and Winfield gave away $17,800 in cash and gifts Thursday.

Also, $1 was donated to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by the Kansas Credit Union Association every time the hashtag #theCUwayKS was used.
