Family Trust Federal Credit Union (Family Trust) has been recognized by the Carolina Credit Union League with the Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award for its work combining financial education with housing stability for individuals transitioning out of homelessness in York County.
The Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award recognizes credit unions that demonstrate leadership in promoting financial literacy through education, outreach, and innovative programs that strengthen financial well-being. Family Trust was selected for its “Changing Lives Through Housing and Financial Literacy” initiative, a collaborative effort designed to meet people at a critical turning point in their lives.
In partnership with Housing Development Corporation of Rock Hill (HDCRH) and United Way of York County, Family Trust supported 11 individuals moving from homelessness into permanent housing through Rapid Rehousing and Permanent Supportive Housing programs. Alongside housing placement, participants received financial education, personalized coaching, and access to Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) to help them build savings and long-term financial stability.
Family Trust staff led workshops focused on budgeting, credit, and saving, giving participants the tools to manage their new stability and work toward independence. Through the IDA program, participants were able to immediately apply what they learned by saving toward future goals with matched funds provided through community partnerships.

The initiative reflects Family Trust’s broader commitment to financial wellness and its mission of helping people achieve financial success. In addition to housing-focused programs, the credit union provides free financial counseling, community workshops, school partnerships, and first-time homebuyer education throughout the region.
