Woodbridge, VA, August 4, 2011 ¾ Belvoir Federal Credit Union’s Financial Literacy Program created a specialized “Reality Cash Course” geared towards youth on Fort Belvoir associated with the Army Child, Youth, and School Services (CYSS) Hired! Apprenticeship Program. Thirty teens were in attendance for the credit union’s financial literacy “Reality Cash Course” debut.
Belvoir Federal’s Financial Coach, Kelli Anthon AFC, CHC, instructed the curriculum with three additional credit union employees (Ruby Escobar, Lisa Thompson, and Marijana Obradovic) and three volunteers from the CYSS Youth Services (Kevin Johnson, Jeff Shinal, and Wendy O’Sullivan). The program delivered the opportunity for Fort Belvoir’s youth to learn financial education that they would eventually use throughout their adult life.
“The students were quite enthusiastic and as the activities unfolded, they became inquisitive and developed valid discussions pertaining to the different concepts being introduced,” stated Anthon. “They learned that running a household takes sacrifice and planning.”
Fort Belvoir’s CYSS Youth Services’ Program Coordinator, Wendy O’Sullivan stated, “The youth felt it was very interactive and enlightening. This curriculum brought to light many costs that teens would not normally think of as an expense for everyday living.”
