First Financial Federal Credit Union of MD awards area students with $135,000 in scholarships

LUTHERVILLE, MD (May 2, 2017) — First Financial Federal Credit Union of Maryland has awarded 45 deserving high school students with $3000 college scholarships totaling $135,000. After narrowing the field from well over 300 applicants, First Financial was proud to formally congratulate the recipients at the organization’s 64th Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 27.

“We congratulate our 2017 scholarship winners for continued excellence in their schools and communities. First Financial’s reason for being is to serve our members,” said President and CEO Eric Church “We’re proud to help these talented and hard-working members to attain their educational goals.”

First Financial FCU has a long-standing partnership with Baltimore and Carroll County Public Schools, as well as many area private schools. Dedicated to youth financial literacy, the credit union spends hundreds of hours in the classroom teaching personal finance skills, and also operates student-run branches in Chesapeake, Dundalk, Eastern Technical, Lansdowne, and New Town High Schools, and Calvert Hall College High School.

Funding for the scholarship program is made possible through the KidsFirst Program dedicated to supporting children in the credit union’s community. Since the program’s inception in 1989, First Financial FCU has awarded 449 scholarships to young adults totaling over $1.4 million.

Applicants were asked to write essays, submit references, list school and community activities, and have a 2.5 minimum GPA.  Finalists were selected by the credit union’s volunteer-based Scholarship Committee.
