Fitzsimons Credit Union awards $5,000 in scholarships to local students

AURORA, CO (July 3, 2023) — Fitzsimons Credit Union believes that education has the power to transform communities and is pleased to announce the 2023 recipients of the Sandra B. Neves Scholarship.  Established by the board of directors and supported by the credit union, the scholarship is named in honor of former CEO, Sandra Neves, and was founded after her retirement in 2017.  Ms. Neves has always been passionate about higher education asserting that “lifelong learning is essential to success and happiness, combined with integrity, upstanding character and continuous personal and spiritual development, education is your key to a joyful life.”

Fitzsimons’ current President & CEO, Robert M. Fryberger Jr., states “We take immense pride in announcing the scholarship awardees, continuing our commitment to support the educational journey of our future leaders.”

This year’s scholarship recipients were chosen based upon academic achievement, career aspirations, community service, extracurricular participation, and financial need. They received equal amounts, totaling $5,000 in awarded scholarships.  The awardees are, in no particular order:

Jenise Ramos is pursuing a degree in Animal Science, with a minor in Military Science at Colorado State University.  Being a first-generation college student, she has encountered both joyful and challenging moments throughout her journey, which has only strengthened her determination and fortitude to succeed.  A mentor at CSU described her as, “Apart from her exceptional academic and extracurricular achievements, Jenise is a person of utmost integrity, humility, and compassion.”

Jazmyn Jóhannassen is pursuing a degree in Event and Meeting Management at Metropolitan State University of Denver.  Despite the disruptions caused by Covid, she has persevered in her studies, as a college peer mentor and a mother.  As part of the College Works team, she was responsible for supporting new and typically first-generation students engage in courses and workshops related to college success.

Maggie Saving is currently pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Northen Colorado, with a passion for teaching and life-long learning. She believes that making a positive change in this world starts with setting up children for success and giving them the tools to become successful members of our society.  Her director states, “She also makes it a point to bring positivity to the classroom and helps to give something special to each one of her students.”

Ciara Andrew is pursuing a degree in Business Management at the University of Alabama.  She completed her academic year on the Presidents List, recipient of the Earnestine Tucker Award – given to sophomores with the highest academic standing and served as the treasurer on the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society.   She is also active with the Legacy Scholars Advisory Board, Culverhouse Ambassadors and the Riptide Dance Team.

Jordyn Richard will be a freshman at the University of Colorado Boulder and is passionate about criminal justice reform.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, Principals List recipient, choir and afterschool dance program.  Her teacher describes her as, “In all that she does, she consistently demonstrates an ambitious nature, willingness to accept challenges and a drive for excellence.”
