Foundation announces 2018 Wegner Award winners

Four individuals to receive credit union movement’s highest national honors

MADISON, WI (October 16, 2017) — The National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards. Angel V. Castro, Bill Hampel, Susan Mitchell and Chuck Purvis will be recognized with Outstanding Individual Achievement awards by the Foundation.

The Herb Wegner Memorial Awards will be presented at a special fundraising event hosted by the Foundation at the Marriott Marquis on February 26, 2018, in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C. Registration for dinner sponsorships and tickets will be available on the Foundation website (ncuf.coop) later this year.

The Foundation’s awards gala celebrates the highest national honors in the credit union movement. Detailed profiles will be released in the next few weeks of the following 2018 Wegner Award honorees:

  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Angel V. Castro, President of Castro y Asociados;
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Bill Hampel, former Chief Policy Officer for the Credit Union National Association;
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Susan Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell, Stankovic & Associates; and
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Chuck Purvis, President/CEO of Coastal Credit Union.

“It’s appropriate to announce these winners this week as credit unions will be celebrating International Credit Union Day,” said Gigi Hyland, Executive Director of the Foundation. “The four award winners truly embody and live out the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ and have done tremendous work to improve people’s financial lives.”
