EL PASO, TX (November 17, 2025) |
GECU reinforced its commitment to supporting the El Paso community during a challenging time as volunteers joined a food distribution event on Saturday, November 15, 2025. The event was made possible by a monetary contribution from Mastercard® and took place at the Mi Comunidad Center, 3506 Fillmore, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., providing essential food items to households affected by the recent government shutdown.
"GECU is committed to meeting our community where they are and standing with families when they need it most," said Linda Nuñez, Assistant Vice President of Community Development at GECU. “We are grateful to team up with Mastercard®, our dedicated volunteers, and the Mi Comunidad Center to support El Paso families during this difficult period.”
Food bags were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with one bag allotted per household. While the distribution was designed to support families impacted by the shutdown, no proof of impact was required in order to receive assistance. Each government-shutdown relief food bag included staples such as bread, rice, beans, spaghetti, tomato sauce, evaporated milk, pancake mix, and additional pantry items. On average, Mi Comunidad distributes approximately 175 bags of food each month — a need that GECU helps meet by providing 10–15 volunteers who regularly assist with packing and distribution.
GECU’s monthly volunteer support at Mi Comunidad is part of the credit union’s long-standing commitment to living out the philosophy of people helping people and ensuring that local families have access to essential resources.
