Genisys Cleans Up Clinton River

Auburn Hills, MI, September 11, 2012 – Genisys Credit Union sponsored the Clinton River Clean Up on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at River Woods Park in Auburn Hills.

“Helping to beautify a natural resource that many people enjoy is a great way to give back and interact with the community,” said Jackie Buchanan, CEO.

The Clinton River provides recreational opportunities, rural serenity and flood relief to many residents in Auburn Hills, Oakland County and Southeast Michigan. However, debris accumulates in and along the banks of the river each year. This makes it unsightly and easy for new log jams to occur, impedes flow and accelerates erosion. The Clinton River Clean Up is an excellent opportunity for the community, individuals, businesses and organizations to work together to help improve the health of the river and our environment.

“Over the past ten years, the City has had great success from its residents, businesses and community organizations in improving the water quality of the Clinton River,” said Shawn Keenan, City of Auburn Hills Water Resources Coordinator. “The improvements in water quality have led to an increase in fish populations and fishing opportunities in the Clinton River. These same water quality improvements have also led to an increase in the number of people canoeing and kayaking on the river.”

Around 20-30 people helped with the Clinton River Clean Up, which continues to grow each year. Auburn Hills is one of 14 sites around the watershed that hosts a clean-up event. The Clinton River Watershed is the most populated watershed in Michigan.

“The strangest item removed during a clean-up event was a riding lawn mower,” said Keenan. “But the most challenging issue we face is managing and removing log jams.”
