July 23, 2012 – Nearly 400 supporters recently gathered in Bolivia, NC to celebrate the much-anticipated grand opening of the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.  The facility, located at 955 Mercy Lane off Old Ocean Highway, was made possible through the many donors of the Closer to Home capital campaign, for which SECU members provided a $1 million grant via the SECU Foundation.  Numerous State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) representatives and volunteers were on hand for the festivities, including SECU Foundation Board Chair Jim Barber, who spoke at the event.

SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, named in honor of SECU members for their generous campaign donation, is an inpatient hospice care center for patients in the Brunswick County area.  It includes seven private patient and family suites, and numerous shared areas designed to meet the needs of those at the center and their visiting caregivers, loved ones and families.

“We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of support for SECU Hospice House from Credit Union members and all those in our community,” said Laurie Bystrom, Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter President & CEO.  “We are very excited to enhance the end-of-life care choices and bring a care center closer to home for residents of the Brunswick County region.”

Barber, who calls Brunswick County home, added, “Hospice projects are close to the hearts of State Employees’ Credit Union members.  Many of our families and friends have benefited from these services, and we are thrilled to be part of helping this much-needed in-patient facility come to fruition in this area.”
