Connecticut’s Credit Unions donate $5,000 to Stamford Dollars for Scholars as part of a charitable social media competition

MERIDEN, CT (December 21, 2015) — Connecticut’s Credit Unions have announced that Stamford Dollars for Scholars was selected as the winner of a recent social media competition for $5,000. From October 1st through November 15th, Connecticut’s Credit Unions asked local charities to rally their supporters and vote for them using the hashtag “CUsGIVEBACK” on various social media platforms. Dollars received the most votes, or uses of the hashtag, and was awarded $5,000 from the Connecticut Credit Union Charitable Foundation.

“We are so excited to be able to award Stamford Dollars for Scholars $5,000 on behalf of Connecticut’s Credit Unions,” said David Hinchey, director of community impact and executive director of the Connecticut Credit Union Charitable Foundation Inc. “Stamford Dollars for Scholars has a history of filling a void by providing scholarships to those who attend school in Stamford.”

The foundation serves as the charitable arm of Connecticut’s Credit Unions and targets organizations that make a difference in their respective communities.

“Giving back and having concern for the community is a core principle of the credit union structure,” Hinchey said. “The support for Stamford Dollars for Scholars was amazing, garnering more than 4,000 votes.”

“We are thrilled to be selected as the winner of Connecticut’s Credit Unions social media competition for $5,000. It was a challenge competing with the many other worthy non-profit charities in CT and we’d like to acknowledge their participation,” said Cathy Drenckhahn, VP of Fundraising for Stamford Dollars for Scholars. “On behalf of Stamford Dollars for Scholars I’d like to thank David Hinchey and Paul Dorner from the Connecticut Credit Union Charitable Foundation for their support of CT charities. With the proceeds, our plan is to establish a 2016 scholarship using the name Credit Unions Give Back,” Drenckhahn added.

The social media contest provided a way to connect credit unions with non-profit organizations in their community. Word was spread through grassroots efforts and the contest caught on from there.
