Hawaii State FCU opens new Salt Lake branch

The new branch located at Salt Lake Shopping Center will serve as the credit union’s first test lab for new technology.

HONOLULU, HI (August 5, 2019)Hawaii State Federal Credit Union (Hawaii State FCU), Hawaii’s largest credit union lender with more than 110,000 members on Oahu and Maui, has opened its 10th branch in Honolulu at the Salt Lake Shopping Center. The 1,800-square-foot branch features a new open-concept design and will serve as the credit union’s first test lab for new technology, including Hawaii’s first Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) – a new self-service banking option with the ability to complete up to 80 percent of traditional teller transactions.

“We’ve created a completely new branch experience that lets our customers take control and choose how they want to interact with us,” said Andrew Rosen, president and CEO of Hawaii State FCU. “It’s high tech meets high touch. Instead of the typical row of teller stations, visitors to our new Salt Lake Branch will be greeted by roaming member specialists who will assist with transaction requests or help members navigate this new technology. Hawaii State FCU is proud to be the first financial institution in Hawaii to introduce ITM technology linked to the core financial system to the everyday banking experience.”

An innovative self-service solution, ITMs combine the traditional functionality of a standard ATM while giving the customer the ability to independently complete, or with the assistance of a member specialist, up to 80 percent of transactions typically handled by a teller. ITMs give users access to all of their accounts, including checking and savings accounts, personal loans and mortgages.

When using an ITM, customers can make loan payments and transfer funds, withdraw cash in multiple denominations, deposit cash and up to 50 checks at a time – all on their own. Hawaii State FCU member specialists will also be available to assist with more complex transactions, including mortgage loans and investment services.

Hawaii State FCU’s ITMs are the first in the nation to feature palm vein-based biometric authentication. Equipped with sensors that can authenticate customers by reading the vein pattern on the palm of the hand, customers can safely and quickly access their accounts without the use of identification or account numbers.

Rosen also noted, “The use of palm vein-based biometrics is one of the most technologically advanced security features on the market – this allows us the ability to provide our members with an increased level of security and peace of mind.”

Hawaii State FCU’s Salt Lake Branch offers a full range of products and financial services, including high-yield savings and checking accounts, mortgage loans, Home Equity Lines of Credit, credit and debit cards, and more. The branch currently features two ITMS, a check/cash deposit-enabled ATM, private offices and member specialist stations for one-on-one consultations. A new engagement area features “Touch Tables” that provide an interactive journey map featuring key products and services. The Salt Lake branch is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are always looking for new opportunities to serve communities that we currently don’t have a presence in. We decided to open a branch in the Salt Lake area to fill a physical void that existed between our Pearlridge Branch and our branches in Honolulu,” added Rosen. “In just the last five years alone we have experienced tremendous growth in membership – from 80,000 to now more than 110,000 members. Responding to the needs of all of our customers is a top priority for us and we will continue to grow to better serve the community.”

Hawaii State FCU membership is open to all active and retired employees of the State of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu and Maui County. In addition, employees and members of more than 300 local organizations and businesses can qualify individuals to become credit union members.
