Hawaii State FCU to break ground on new Downtown Honolulu headquarters

The renovation of the 70,000 square-foot building is slated for completion in Summer 2022

HONOLULU, HI (July 19, 2021)Hawaii State Federal Credit Union (Hawaii State FCU), has announced that it will begin an extensive renovation of its new headquarters, located in Downtown Honolulu at 333 Queen St., by the end of this month. The transformation of the former Melim Building, which includes a 70,000 square-foot office building and 80,000 square-foot adjacent parking garage, is slated for completion in summer 2022.

“As our credit union continues to grow, our goal is to consolidate our headquarters into a larger space with a new branch that is conveniently located near our core field of membership in the downtown Honolulu and civic center area,” said Andrew Rosen, president and CEO of Hawaii State FCU. “The purchase and building design process started at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Our new headquarters will be designed to prioritize health, wellness, collaboration and innovation and we look forward to creating an invigorating new workplace for our employees.”

Hawaii State FCU purchased the building in July 2020 as the credit union plans to consolidate more than 250 employees across multiple office locations. The new headquarters will feature many building systems and operational protocols to create a safe and comfortable environment for its employees. Design features will include a state-of-the-art HVAC system with MERV 13 filtration and UVC light technology, hand washing “wellness zones” located on every floor, 6-foot furniture modules to allow for workspace distancing, fitness center, privacy rooms for nursing mothers, and more.

The new headquarters will be technology-driven and will include a new branch on the first floor of the 10-story building to provide convenient access for members located in the downtown and civic center area of Honolulu. Hawaii State FCU’s current headquarters of more than 40 years is located at 560 Halekauwila Street.

Hawaii State FCU has selected Nordic PCL Construction, Inc. (Nordic) as general contractor and Hiarchy LLP (Hiarchy) as architect for its future headquarters. Nordic’s diverse buildings portfolio includes the development of many large-scale residential, hotel, retail, and medical facilities across the state. Nordic has more than 30 offices across the U.S., Australia and the Caribbean. Hiarchy is an award-winning architecture and design firm with offices based in Honolulu and Los Angeles, specializing in commercial office, complicated mixed use multi-family housing, civic projects and design intensive custom projects. The firm’s lead principals carry LEED Accreditation, WELL Accreditation and Certified Energy Management certification.

“We’re pleased to partner with two reputable, local firms on this project. As the building will undergo an extensive demolition and renovation of the interior, as well as some improvements to the building’s façade, we have complete confidence that Nordic PCL and Hiarchy will ensure that our vision becomes a reality,” added Rosen.
