Newburgh, IN — Heritage Federal Credit Union has won a first place award in the state of Indiana for the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for credit unions. The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by The Indiana Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.
Heritage Federal Credit Union won first place in the $200 – $500 million in assets category for the state of Indiana and was recognized at the Indiana Credit Union League’s 76th Annual Meeting and Convention held in Indianapolis on September 24. At the state level, credit unions are divided into 7 categories based on asset size, and winners are then selected from each of the categories.
Heritage Federal Credit Union’s entry detailed its “People Helping People” partnership with Fox 7. The intent of this partnership is to help non-profit organizations get their message out to the community. Eleven months of the year, Heritage Federal Credit Union selects one of the over 100 organizations that they assist annually to be featured in a PSA which airs on Fox 7 throughout the month (approximately 25 per month). Along with the PSA, a news story is shot that airs one time during the month on the morning and evening news. Fox 7 also has a dedicated page on their website, www.tristatehomepage.com, that features all of the PSA’s and news stories.
Ruth Gaon, CCE, President and CEO of Heritage Federal Credit Union said of the honor, “I am so proud of all the efforts that contributed to Heritage Federal Credit Union’s being recognized with this award. It is a great reflection of the commitment all the employees, board members, and members make to the ‘People Helping People’ philosophy upon which credit unions are founded. By the very nature of the title of the program, we have set out to develop a partnership with Fox 7 that shows what a powerful force the cooperative spirit can be. Our goal was to not just raise money or awareness for these organizations, but to give a face and name to the truly life-giving and life-saving roles they play among us every day.”
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award has honored credit unions for their charitable contributions to their communities since 1987. The competition is named after early credit union pioneer Dora Maxwell. Maxwell was one of the original signers of CUNA’s constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, and she is also known for the work she did with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy.
Heritage Federal Credit Union’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with other projects from credit unions in the same asset category ($200-$500 million in assets) nationwide. Winners will be announced at CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference in February.
