Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union held its annual Summer Kickoff event Saturday, August 6th, for the District 6 Dorchester Dragons, a local Special Olympics group. 50 Athletes, along with their families and caregivers, celebrated the start of the summer sports season. Coaches for the soccer, golf and bowling teams addressed the group with highlights from last year and offered encouraging words about teamwork and participation for 2011.

For the fourth year in a row, the event was held at the Summerville Soccer Club off of Walden Ridge Road in Summerville. The Summerville Assembly #28, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls provided lunch and All-Mist kept everyone cool with their outdoor misting fans. Kenneth Fleetwood, of Fleetwood’s DJ Service, created a fun, party atmosphere that kept the team’s enthusiasm going throughout the event. Mr. Fleetwood was also recognized at this year’s event by the Special Olympics group for his continued support over the past several years.
Heritage Trust presented $1,500 to the Dragons and donated over $500 worth of equipment for their 2011 summer sports season

There are over 15,500 registered children and adults with intellectual disabilities in South Carolina.* Special Olympics offers athletes the opportunity of proper instruction and encouragement so they can learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.

Heritage Trust would like to bring attention to this great program in hopes of gaining additional volunteers to participate with Special Olympics causes throughout the year. (www.specialolympics.org)
