Hiway Credit Union awarded 2023 HERBIE by St. Paul Chamber

ST. PAUL, MN (June 23, 2023) — Hiway Credit Union® has been honored with the 2023 HERBIE Award (Business/Organization) by the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. Named after famed hockey coach Herb Brooks, the HERBIE award recognizes individuals and businesses who exemplify the traits inspired by its namesake: Humanitarian, Enterprising, Resilient, Bold, Inspirational and Ethical. Only one organization and one individual are recognized each year.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Hiway CEO/President Dave Boden. “Herb Brooks was an inspiration and was proud of his St. Paul roots. Much like Coach Brooks, Hiway takes a lot of pride in being born in St. Paul. We strive every day to not only serve our members but to improve the communities in which they live, supporting the St. Paul schools and the many programs and community events that make St. Paul so special.”

A longtime active member of the St. Paul community, 92-year-old Hiway Credit Union has a genuine commitment to making a positive difference for the Capital City’s residents, neighborhoods and organizations. That’s illustrated in many ways, including Hiway’s sponsorship of many free community events including Lowertown Sounds, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, the Hmong Festival, the Irish Festival and the St. Paul Pride Festival.

Hiway also supports many financial education and youth-focused efforts, including the city of St. Paul’s Right Track internship program, Junior Achievement, Best Prep and Cookie Cart. Hiway also has a strong relationship with St. Paul Public Schools, operating four high school branches (at Johnson, Como Park, Harding and Highland Park) and Hiway associates are regular classroom presenters, delivering important content and lessons to further financial empowerment and well-being in our youth.

In addition to supporting financial education and youth-focused efforts, Hiway has a strong tradition of volunteerism supporting a variety of eastside entities such as Second Harvest Heartland, Urban Roots, Feed My Starving Children and Ronald McDonald House.

Hiway’s award winning Hockey Kids4Kids program, a collaborative effort between Hiway, the Minnesota Wild and Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, encourages youth hockey players throughout the State of Hockey to support and raise money for St. Paul’s Gillette Children’s. The initiative has raised nearly $135,000 since the program’s inception in 2017.

Hiway joins other notable St. Paul organizations honored with a HERBIE, including Junior Achievement, Cookie Cart, the Sanneh Foundation, Xcel Energy, and St. Paul College. Hiway will be recognized at an awards luncheon on Thursday, June 22 in downtown St. Paul.
