HopeSouth awards $2,000 in teacher grants

ABBEVILLE, SC (August 14, 2019) — From brilliant field trips to unique science experiments, teachers in Abbeville County Schools have some ambitious plans for students. To kick off the 2018-19 school year, HopeSouth Federal Credit Union is pleased to award a total of $2,000 in teacher grants.

Jennifer Smith, a fourth-grade teacher at Westwood Elementary, received a $1,000 grant for a “family camp out” experience with students. An evening for teachers, students and parents, the field trip will encourage reading, math, science, history, art and music while enjoying the great outdoors.

Two additional $500 grants were awarded to science teachers Emily Busby of Diamond Hill Elementary and Renee McCaslan of Wright Middle School. Busby will use her grant to purchase microscopes and weather prediction tools, whereas McCaslan will create a radar gun lab to measure speed, distance and mass of objects in motion.

“We are proud to support our teachers in their unwavering spirit to make a difference,” said HopeSouth CEO Faye Crocker. “This year’s projects encourage hands-on learning. We applaud these teachers for initiatives that develop the creative and inventive mindset of students.”
