How to hire the best people for your company; three tips from Numerica

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA (January 19, 2022) — Many companies in our region are struggling to get people hired. The pandemic has brought on new hiring challenges, and Numerica would love to share with your readers a few of the things we’ve learned along the way, and offer some tips on how we’ve navigated this.

“Before Covid-19, we would post a position and within days we’d have dozens of candidates,” said Lindsey Skinfill, Numerica Credit Union’s vice president of culture. “Now, we see only one or two people applying for those same jobs.”

The Labor Department reported that employers posted 10.6 million job openings in November. With all these new positions becoming available, companies remain in desperate need of workers.

How are companies getting the right people in the door?

Here are 3 key tips we’d be happy to share with your viewers/readers.

  1. Job fairs. How do you make these successful? Numerica’s most recent Spokane Valley based job fair gained 15 new hires.
  • Recruiters call applicants beforehand to go in-depth about what the job is.
  • Provide some interview questions in advance so applicants are able to answer confidently.
  • Numerica’s job fairs are an “open house” style that go into the evenings, opening up your applicant pool.
  • Have a quick turn-around hire time. At Numerica’s job fairs, applicants are offered a position within 48 hours of interviewing.

*Pro-Tip: By providing a tour and letting applicants meet with managers, people are able to learn more about the position and decide if it’s a good fit.

  1. Get your HR team and recruiters more involved in interviews.Having a high-touch recruiter means they’re with applicants every step of the way.
  • Numerica’s HR team meets with department managers to see exactly what they’re looking for.
  • Recruiters learn the role, and stay with applications through the entire interview process.

*Pro-Tip: If your company doesn’t have recruiters, utilize hiring managers when searching out candidates.

  1. Offer employee referral programs.
  • Team members are rewarded financially if someone they’ve referred gets hired and stays for at least one month.
  • This encourages your team to seek out their friends and family who are looking for a new job.
