Hughes Federal Credit Union awards $14,000 in scholarships to outstanding high school seniors

TUCSON, AZ (May 30, 2023) — Hughes Federal Credit Union announced today the seven exceptional high school seniors selected to receive $2,000 Roberta Reeves Memorial Scholarships to support their higher education. The scholarship program, renamed this year in honor of long-serving board member Reeves, has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships since its inception in 2005.

The Hughes annual scholarship program recognizes academic excellence and encourages students to think creatively about personal finance and technology. It was open to

high school seniors who were members of the credit union. Applicants were required to submit an online scholarship form, with either a written essay or a brief video answering the prompt, “If you could create a financial app, what features would you include and what would you name it?”

Irlanda Cuevas, Hughes business development and community relations manager, expressed her excitement about the scholarship program. “We are thrilled to congratulate these remarkable students on their well-deserved scholarships. Their creativity, passion and dedication to financial education have truly impressed us. Hughes believes in investing in the future of our community and supporting these bright young minds is a reflection of our commitment to their success. We can’t wait to see them thrive as they pursue their future goals.”

The following high school seniors have been awarded the Roberta Reeves Memorial Scholarship:

  • Mathew Schafer – Sahuaro High School
  • Ross Wilson – Pusch Ridge Christian Academy
  • Rachel Pixley – Mountain View High School
  • Loryn Potter – Empire High School
  • Lance Perry – Salpointe Catholic High School
  • Alex Myers – Sonoran Science Academy
  • Isai Brenton – Sunnyside High School

Alongside the scholarship program, Hughes Federal Credit Union actively promotes financial literacy among youth through various educational partnerships including collaborations with local school districts and community associations, such as the Girls Scouts of Southern Arizona, Take Charge Cats and Earn to Learn. In addition, Hughes offers free online personal finance training through its user-friendly tool, MoneyCoach.
