WOMEN WITHIN THE INDUSTRY
Did you know credit unions are leading the way in financial services, as it relates to ensuring female representation on their boards and at the executive level?
- Women make up 70% of the credit union workforce in the USA, according to CUNA's Jim Nussle at a 2017 Women’s Global Leadership Network meeting.
- A credit union CEO is more than 6x likely to be a woman than the CEO of a bank (CUNA, Women in CU leadership).
- A majority (51%) of credit union CEOs are women – this is more than 15 times higher than the rate of women CEOs at banks (3%), according to CUNA’s (CUNA, Women in CU leadership).
- 33% of CU board positions are women according to CUNA, compared to a mere 16% of bank board positions (CUNA, Women in CU leadership).
However, there is still work to be done.
- Women are still under-represented at the top levels of the larger credit unios, with women leading only 15% of credit unions with $1 billion in assets. Majority of women CEOs (66%) in the industry are at CUs with less than $50 million in assets (FLEX, Women rising in the workplace: the CU difference).
- Nearly 1 in 10 credit unios (502 credit unios total) do not have any women representation on their Boards (CU Collaborate, Diversity and performance of CU Board of Directors).
At a time when women continue to thrive in positions of leadership, the fact that women are underrepresented across the corporate ladder remains.
