Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually in October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union difference. The 2017 International Credit Union (ICU) Day® theme — “Dreams Thrive Here” illustrates how credit union and other financial cooperatives serve as catalysts to make different professions, personal choices, and career paths real. Heritage Federal Credit Union celebrates this event in order to thank the members of Heritage Federal Credit Union for their trust and loyalty.
Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide an effective and viable alternative to for-profit financial institutions for more than 217 million members at more than 57,000 credit unions in 105 countries worldwide. They exist to serve their members, providing a safe place to save money and access affordable loans. Locally, Heritage Federal Credit Union offers financial products and services to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Vanderburgh, Warrick, or Posey Counties in Indiana and Henderson County in Kentucky, or has an immediate family member who does. As of October 2017, Heritage Federal Credit Union has over $548 million in assets, serves more than 55,400 members, and operates 8 branches in Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Posey counties in Indiana and 1 branch in Henderson County in Kentucky. HFCU will also be opening a new branch in Mt. Vernon in late November 2017.
Credit unions are recognized as a force for positive economic and social change and have provided significant social and economic value in both developed and emerging nations. International Credit Union Day is sponsored by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), the international trade association and development agency for credit unions worldwide, and Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the premier trade association for credit unions in the United States.
Credit unions from around the world celebrate the day with parades, festivals, contests, and open houses.
