International Credit Union Day “Dreams Thrive Here” theme, people-first banking philosophy celebrated by Pennsylvania-based credit union PSECU

HARRISBURG, PA (October 18, 2017)Tomorrow, October 19, leading Pennsylvania-based credit union PSECU, along with more than 56,000 other credit unions around the world, will celebrate International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) and the philosophy and achievements of the credit union movement.

“The credit union model is unique in that it creates financial cooperatives that are ‘owned’ by their members. Unlike banks, which ultimately serve corporate stockholders, money made by a credit union is returned to its members through benefits like competitive loan rates and low- or no-fee products and services,” explained PSECU President Greg Smith. “Credit unions also strive to follow the ‘people helping people’ commitment of support for their members and their communities through strong corporate social responsibility efforts like charitable giving and volunteerism.”

PSECU celebrates ICU Day because it believes the not-for-profit structure and people-first principles of credit unions make them the ideal financial institutions for all people. This year’s ICU Day theme is “Dreams Thrive Here,” a celebration of how credit unions help people achieve their biggest goals in life.

In recognition of this year’s ICU Day theme, PSECU created a short PSECU Asks You video in which its members shared how PSECU and the credit union movement have helped them achieve their dreams. They will be posting the video on Facebook and asking viewers to comment on how PSECU has helped them achieve a financial goal.

“International Credit Union Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect on and commemorate the good work that credit unions are doing all around the world,” added Smith. “I encourage anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of credit union banking to visit psecu.com/join.”

ICU Day is presented annually by the Credit Union National Association and the World Council of Credit Unions.
