Local credit union to provide Financial Literacy Day for Kern youth

BAKERSFIELD, CA (April 8, 2024) — Valley Strong Credit Union will be giving away two $2,500 college scholarships in celebration of Financial Literacy Month in April. Youth, ages 15-18, who RSVP to attend the credit union’s first Financial Literacy Day will be eligible to win and the scholarships will be awarded at the April 13 event- must be present to win. An estimated 125 Kern County youth will have an opportunity to learn what it’s like to have financial responsibilities and live on a budget with a ‘Bite of Reality’ during the credit union’s Financial Literacy Day.

The Bite of Reality program is a hands-on app-based simulation that appeals to teens while giving them a taste of real-world financial realities. Teens are given a fictional occupation, salary, credit score, spouse and a child, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments.

​Participants in the Financial Literacy Day will also have free access to Zogo educational app, an opportunity to speak with local college and professional development organizations and be eligible to win one of two $2,500 college scholarships (must be present to win).
