Local credit unions will place seven “Little Free Library” book houses in different park locations across Genesee & Shiawassee counties

FENTON, MI (August 3, 2017) — In the cooperative spirit of “People helping People” the Flint Area Credit Unions received a grant from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation to help promote literacy in our community.  “We’re grateful for the support of MCUF.  There’s nothing more important to help educate children than providing access to books.  We are delighted to have the collaboration of the Flint Area Credit Unions and Genesee County Parks and Recreation, to place and monitor the Little Free Libraries. ” said Karen Church, CEO of ELGA Credit Union.

The “Little Free Library” book houses will be placed in Genesee & Shiawassee Parks. The houses will be located in For –Mar, Flint Development Center, Sarvis, Longway, Berston Field House, Sarginson, and Durand Area Parks.

The unveiling of the first installation of one of the libraries will be at For – Mar Nature Preserve on Friday, August 11th at 3:00pm.

Dort Federal, ELGA, Financial Plus, Sagelink, and Security Credit Unions have adopted the little libraries and will be responsible to replenish the books.  The credit unions will accept new and used book donations in all of their branches.   Children will be invited to take the books with no obligation to replace or return them.  If they choose to return them, they will initial the inside cover creating some fun to see how many children have read the book.

The book houses were designed and built by area students at the Genesee Career Institute. Students of the Mott Community Collage Fabrication lab made the signage. “It’s truly been a community wide effort” states Karen Church.

Today a reader… tomorrow a leader.
