Local school receives $5,900 grant for kissing a pig

FORT WASHINGTON, PA (March 2, 2016) — William Tennent High School has participated in TruMark Financial® Credit Union’s Kiss-A-Pig Financial Literacy Fundraiser for the past four years. Schools, community leaders, and business professionals raise money for the privilege of kissing a pig in support of financial literacy in local schools. Dr. Al Catarro, partnership and affiliations coordinator, has been the man behind the scenes, leading William Tennent High School’s fundraising efforts. In October 2015, he was front and center as he took the stage to pucker up and kiss the pig.

Dr. Catarro’s kiss landed William Tennent High School a $5,900 grant for personal finance materials. He and other participants in the fundraiser secured sponsors and donations to raise $65,000 for the chance to kiss a pig. The students sold lollipops, partnered with a local restaurant, and the faculty had a dress down day to raise funds.

The Kiss-a-Pig fundraiser proceeds helped the school purchase iPads, technology and personal finance simulations, and tablets. As part of the credit union’s financial literacy program, credit union employees conduct presentations at local schools on topics such as saving, credit, budgeting, job interviewing techniques, and investing. The presentations complement classroom instruction and provide third-party expertise.

The following schools also participated in the Kiss-A-Pig Financial Literacy Fundraiser and received a $5,900 grant for personal finance resources:

  • Bensalem High School
  • Forrest Elementary School
  • Franklin Towne Charter School
  • George Washington High School
  • Northeast High School
  • Our Lady of Calvary
  • Philadelphia Academy Charter School
  • Plymouth Whitemarsh High School
  • Stephen Decatur Elementary School
  • William Hunter Elementary School

“Kissing a pig isn’t so bad when it results in a $5,900 grant for materials to teach students the fundamentals of saving and borrowing,” said Catarro. The school is already planning its strategy for next year.
