Members Cooperative Credit Union announces CEO retirement and succession plan
ATKIN, MN (March 10, 2020) — Members Cooperative Credit Union announced that Tammy Heikkinen will be retiring as President/CEO of the credit union. Heikkinen, who has been with MCCU since 1978 and in her current role since 2008, will be involved with the board and executive leadership team in support of a successful transition.
Under Heikkinen’s leadership, the credit union has grown to almost $800 million in assets, and over 55,000 members, with twelve branch locations across the state of Minnesota.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our members and communities for so many years. Knowing that the credit union is financially sound and well-positioned for its next stage of growth, I am confident about the organization’s promising future,” stated Heikkinen.

In recent years, the credit union has competed two successful mergers, implemented a LEAN operational model, and nurtured a culture focused on human capital and leadership development at the credit union. MCCU has been recognized as an outstanding credit union by many outlets, including being named the 2019 Minnesota Credit Union of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Best Credit Union in 2019 from the Duluth News Tribune, and was a finalist for the Future Branch Innovator Awards in the category of “Outstanding Branch Design” in 2019.
As part of the credit union’s transition plan, the board of directors has engaged the recruiting firm D. Hilton Associates, Inc., who will be conducting a nationwide search. Heikkinen will serve in her position until her successor joins the credit union.
