Members Credit Union donates shoes to local homeless

WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA (December 13, 2017) — Members Credit Union (MCU) donated 15 pairs of new tennis shoes, along with 15 gift bags filled with hygiene items, flashlights, and batteries to homeless men and women throughout Winston-Salem.

The credit union decided to donate the shoes after Jon Hamby, MCU’s Member Relations Coordinator, learned about a community of homeless people who are known as, “campers” in Winston-Salem after meeting Charles Hahn, an advocate for the local homeless community. Hamby went with Hahn to visit various homeless camps within the city and learned about their most significant needs. One of those needs included reliable footwear.

“I am grateful to MCU for having such caring employees who go the extra mile for their members  and their communities!” Charles Hahn, Advocate for Winston-Salem Homeless.

MCU employees purchased tennis shoes and made sure that each homeless person had a pair of shoes in their size. In addition to shoes, the credit union also put together gift bags with flashlights, batteries, personal care items and socks donated by Harriss and Covington Hosiery Mills, Inc..  Additional shoes and items were bought thanks to proceeds from credit union fundraisers held in 2017.

“I am truly blessed and helping someone in need is just one way I can pass along a blessing to someone else,” said Bridget Berry, Director of Lending for MCU.

Hahn and Hamby plan to deliver all 15 pairs of shoes and gift bags to the homeless camps in person on Saturday, December 16th.
