The Financial Education Team at Meriwest Credit Union has always believed that the best way to improve a young person’s chances for a financially secure adulthood is to get to them early and often with money management education. That is exactly what was accomplished this spring when over 900 middle school, high school, and college students took part in Meriwest Credit Union’s financial education presentations. The Spring Series of Reality Based Budget presentations culminated with Meriwest presenters providing budget workshops to over 350 students at San Ramon’s Gale Ranch Middle School on June 7th.

“We have been working closely with teachers and administrators to set up a number of financial education workshops at many of the schools in the communities Meriwest Credit Union serves.” said Greg Meyer, Meriwest Credit Union’s Community Relations Manager. “From the beginning of Financial Education Month, April First, Meriwest has been solidly engaged with our schools; providing budget and finance workshops to over 900 students.”

Program Highlights

  • Independence High School, San Jose – 70 Academy of Finance students learned how to manage their credit and be responsible with credit cards.
  • Evergreen High, San Jose – Over 120 students were given insight into their adult futures with Meriwest’s Reality Based Budgets Post College Budget Simulation.
  • Shirakawa Elementary School, San Jose – 90 8th Graders learned about entrepreneurship and financing a small business from the store front to the stock market.
  • In San Ramon, 330 students were present when Meriwest presented Reality Based Budgets at Windemere Ranch Middle School in April and, on June 7th, over 350 students took part in the Reality Based Budget program at Gale Ranch Middle School.

“We appreciate Meriwest’s staff coming to our school and teaching our students about life after college.” said Beth Bergen, Math Teacher at Gale Ranch Middle School in San Ramon. “The Reality Based Budgets presentation opened our students’ eyes to the realities of living away from home and managing your own finances. Even college grads with great jobs have to plan their spending!”
