Michigan Credit Unions bring financial “reality” to Muskegon Area Career Tech students

MUSKEGON, MI (June 16, 2015) — On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 more than 130 students from local high schools learned real-life lessons in budgeting and the cost of living as the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL), in association with the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC), presented a “Reality Fair.” The Reality Fair included 27 volunteers from 8 credit unions along with members of the MCUL and the MACTC.

At the fair, students were given a financial worksheet containing a list of “real-world” expenses— including housing, furniture, clothing, and entertainment— all expenses that they will likely encounter as income-earning adults. The students visited information booths manned by volunteers, who helped the students receive the best, most practical budget for each category. Finally, after completing their financial worksheets, students received individual advice from financial counselors about how to improve their budgets and save money or spend more prudently.

Special thanks go to the following persons and organizations for making this possible: Barb Sheren, Char Morris, Debby Mitteer, Jim Merkel, Jim Scheuerle, Sheryl Hogel, Mindy Boisclair, Best Financial Credit Union, Family Financial Credit Union, Gerber Federal Credit Union, HarborLight Credit Union, Michigan Coastal Credit Union, Port City Credit Union, SB Community Credit Union, Service 1 Credit Union, MCUL Moon Chapter, Michigan Credit Union Foundation, and Muskegon Area Career Tech Center.
