Michigan high school, college students receive $66,000 in scholarships from Michigan First Credit Union

36 students receive scholarships ranging from $1,000-$5,000

LATHRUP VILLAGE, MI (April 23, 2018)Michigan First Credit Union announced today it has awarded 36 Michigan high school and college students a total of $66,000 in scholarships following its annual video and essay competition. In total, the financial institution has given away more than $1 million in scholarships to local students since the scholarship program’s inception. Michigan First President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

Funded by the Michigan First Foundation, the 2018 scholarship program featured three categories for contestants to enter, including high school video or essay and college video. Students had to answer the question, “What is a topic more people should know about and why?” A panel of judges reviewed the entries and selected two $5,000 top winners for each category, and one runner-up in each category was awarded a $3,000 scholarship.

“At Michigan First, we believe it’s our responsibility to support and enhance our community. One way we do that is through our scholarship program,” said Poulos. “Education costs continue to climb, and we award scholarships to help minimize the financial burden on students, starting them on the right path for a successful financial future.”

In addition to the top winners, the Credit Union awarded 27 students with a $1,000 scholarship. Michigan First received more than 100 entries for this year’s competition, and the judges reviewed all video and essay submissions for quality and creativity, among other factors, when selecting the winners.

To raise funds for the scholarship program, Michigan First is hosting its annual Raymond Dudus Memorial Golf Classic at Wabeek Country Club in Bloomfield Hills on June 4, 2018.
