KINGSTON – With thousands of consumers pledging to move their money to a credit union by Nov. 5 as part of “Bank Transfer Day,” Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (MHV) is already seeing increased membership as a result of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

“Every day is a good day to join a credit union,” says Robert Michaud, MHV Chief Marketing Officer. There is no better time than now to become one of more than 92 million Americans nationwide who are already enjoying the advantages of credit union membership.”

The results of a Creditcards.com poll* found that 78% of debit card holders surveyed said they will switch banks to avoid monthly fees charged when they use their debit cards to make purchases, and credit unions are receiving plenty of positive press ahead of Bank Transfer Day. MHV has already seen an influx of new members: More than 246 checking accounts have been opened since October 1st, representing a 18% increase over the same time period of one year ago.

“Credit unions are unique among financial institutions,” Michaud said. “Banks and other financial institutions exist to maximize profits to their shareholders; credit unions exist solely to maximize service to their members.”

For those hesitant to change over to a credit union, they may have the misunderstanding that they will have to sacrifice service and convenience when switching over. That is not the case as credit unions offer all the same services and conveniences that the ‘big banks’ offer. For example, as part of the CU24 ATM network, credit union members have access to over 60,000 ATMs nationwide, compared to only 18,000** at Bank of America. Credit unions offer online banking and bill payer, debit cards, direct deposit and some even offer mobile banking which MHV will be offering members in the near future.

“Make your best decision based on your needs and that of your family,” Michaud added, “If you like saving money and conducting your banking at a place that focuses on your needs, join a credit union.”

All MHV branches will be open from 9am to 2pm on Bank Transfer Day taking place on Saturday, November 5th, 2011 and ready to help new members transfer their accounts over to the credit union.
