Minnesota Credit Union Foundation announces Financial Education Grant recipients

ST. PAUL, MN (October 10, 2019) — The Minnesota Credit Union Foundation (MnCUF) recently awarded six financial education grants to assist Minnesota credit unions with implementing financial education projects. MnCUF Financial Education Grants are awarded on annual basis and can include outreach, financial education curriculum and experiential learning initiatives.

“Minnesota’s credit unions continue to demonstrate their commitment to bringing financial education to their communities in meaningful ways,” said Minnesota Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Andrea Molnau. “Congratulations to the grant recipients, we are proud to support these outstanding initiatives.”

The following are the 2019 Financial Education Grant recipients and projects: Firefly Credit Union – To find new creative ways to educate their members on personal finance, Firefly launched a podcast to answer basic financial questions that millennials are too afraid to ask. The grant will support the second season of the podcast with a goal to reach 1,000 listeners and viewer over the next year.

Heartland Credit Union – With a focus on youth account owners, Heartland Credit Union will provide a personal finance library to give members access to resources needed to succeed financially through all phases of their life.

Two Harbors Credit Union – Two Harbors will host youth “Lunch and Learn” classrooms conversations to provide education to high school students on the basics of financial literacy. The talks will utilize an engaging financial education program based in research and consumer need.

United Educators Credit Union – After an overwhelmingly successful program in 2019, UECU will offer “Mad City Money” to six more schools that serve students at alternative learning centers, in special education programs, or at schools with a high number of students who receive free or reduced lunch. Mad City Money is a hands-on, real-world budgeting simulation for students.

The Foundation Board of Directors evaluates applications based on a variety of factors, including credit union value, community impact, collaboration, and creativity. For more information, visit the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation website.
