Montana’s Giant Springs Chapter of Credit Unions holds garage sale to raise funds for children with low-vision disabilities

HELENA, MT (August 14, 2019) — On Saturday, August 10, Montana’s Giant Springs Chapter of Credit Unions hosted their annual Garage Sale for Good where they raised nearly $3,500 for the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind (MSDB) and the Lions Clubs of Montana Low Vision Reader Project.

The Low Vision Reader Project’s goal is to provide portable tablets that have magnifying capabilities and access to Google applications. These devices allow visually disabled children from across the state to take photos of various lessons and assignments, making it easier for the students to stay up to speed on their classwork.

“These devices can change a student’s life,” says Mark Willmarth, Member of the Great Falls Lions Club and board member of the MSDB Foundation. “They give them the ability to participate in everyday activities that would normally be hindered by their visual disabilities. I speak for so many when I say we are thankful for the contributions of the local community and the local credit unions.”

For the past three years, credit unions of the Giant Springs Chapter of Montana’s Credit Unions have held the Garage Sale for Good to raise money for deserving causes. In past years, funds have been raised for the Great Falls Children’s Receiving Home and the Great Falls Royal Family KIDS Camp. All of the items sold at the garage sale are donated by the generous staff from each credit union in Great Falls and others in the local community.

“Credit Unions operate on the principle of people helping people, and the Garage Sale for Good project is another example of how Credit Unions execute this principle,” said MaryEllen Kropp, Lending Director for 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union and President of the Giant Springs Chapter of the Montana Credit Union’s.  “Every year we are pleasantly surprised and filled with gratitude for everyone who contributed to the success of our efforts to give back to the community in which we live.”
