NASCUS Installs New Leadership at State System Summit

Chicago, Illinois  – On Sept. 14, 2011, Utah’s credit union regulator, Orla Beth Peck, became the NASCUS Chairman for a two-year term following Tom Candon of Vermont. Additionally, Catherine Tierney, Community First Credit Union, Wisconsin, was installed as the new Chairman of the NASCUS Credit Union Advisory Council following the chairmanship of Parker Cann of BECU, Washington.

NASCUS Chairman Peck, the supervisor of credit unions for the Utah Department of Financial Institutions, started her state regulator career at the Utah agency as an examiner in 1981. She was named supervisor of credit unions in 1992. A long time member of NASCUS, Peck has been active in NASCUS committees and also as a trustee and chairman of the National Institute for State Credit Union Examination (NISCUE). Peck has served on the NASCUS Board of Directors since 2007.

“I am honored to serve as the new NASCUS Chairman,” said Peck. “NASCUS’ position as the national voice for state credit union regulators is critical as we continue to navigate a challenging regulatory environment for credit unions. I look forward to working with my fellow regulators and to contributing to NASCUS’ important work on behalf of the state credit union regulatory system.”

Tierney has been active with the credit union community and NASCUS for many years. Tierney joined Community First Credit Union in 1976, and was named President and CEO in 1994.  Under her leadership the credit union has grown to $1.5 billion in assets with 88,000 members. Tierney has been a director of the NASCUS Credit Union Executive Council since 2003 and was recognized with the NASCUS Pierre Jay Award in 2009.

“As advisors to NASCUS and state regulators, the Credit Union Advisory Council is a valuable mechanism for important dialogue about the impact of regulation on state-chartered credit unions,” said Tierney. “I am pleased to serve as the Credit Union Advisory Council Chairman to further NASCUS’ efforts to preserve the state charter and enhance state regulation.”

NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney also recognized Candon and Cann for their contributions to NASCUS. “NASCUS is grateful for Tom and Parker’s incredible leadership of NASCUS over the past two years,” said Fortney. “They represented our organization with the highest professionalism and made lasting contributions to NASCUS in a particularly challenging economic time. Orla Beth and Cathie are following great examples in Tom and Parker as we continue to successfully advocate for the state credit union system into the future.”
