NEFCU scholarship committee selects winner: Franklin Square’s Tara Faraone is the one!

Student Awarded NEFCU’s 2017 “Making A Difference Premier Scholarship”

WESTBURY, NY (August 29, 2017) — NEFCU has named Franklin Square’s Tara Faraone the recipient of its 2017 Making a Difference Premier Scholarship award, a $20,000 grant that the recent high school graduate will use toward her studies beginning this year at SUNY Cortland.

As this year’s winner of NEFCU’s top scholarship, Ms. Faraone will receive $5,000 per academic year over the next four years.  In addition to receiving the top honor in the credit union’s Premier Scholarship program, the H. Frank Carey High School graduate was also awarded $1,000 from NEFCU earlier this year as part of NEFCU’s Making A Difference Family Scholarship program.

Since introducing its Premier Scholarship program in 2008, NEFCU has granted more than $1 million in scholarships to Long Island students.

Ms. Faraone achieved a weighted high school grade point average of 100.24.  She was class treasurer, co-president of the school’s stage crew/PA club; literary editor of the student magazine; and editor-in-chief of the yearbook. She is undecided as to her major at SUNY Cortland, but is considering neuropsychology, while also pursuing a minor in professional writing.

The annual program selects one exceptional Long Island student who is a member (or has a parent or guardian that is a member) of the Westbury-based credit union. To apply for this scholarship, applicants needed to have completed at least 50 hours of community service, a four-year overall high school grade of 90 or above, and be a recent recipient of NEFCU’s Making a Difference Family Scholarship or High School Scholarship.

“I am honored to have been chosen to receive this NEFCU scholarship. I worked very hard in high school to balance my time between schoolwork, extracurriculars, and volunteer work, and this scholarship will help me continue to do that in college,” said Ms. Faraone.  “I cannot express enough how proud and grateful I am to have won this scholarship.”

“For almost a decade we have been helping some of the brightest and most inspiring Long Island students along in their academic journey,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations at NEFCU.  “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is aptly named because so many of these young men and women are destined to change lives, effect change and truly make a difference in the world.  We’re proud of them, and proud that we can be part of this process.”
