New Horizons Credit Union earns Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award

MOBILE, AL (February 15, 2019) — New Horizons Credit Union has been recognized by the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) with the First Place Dora Maxwell award for credit unions in its asset division for exhibiting excellence in community social responsibility.  As a first place winner, New Horizons Credit Union will continue to the national level to compete against its fellow credit union peers across the country.

The Credit Union Award is named after Dora Maxwell who organized her first credit union in 1920 and secured charters for hundreds of credit unions throughout the United States. She was one of the 33 signers of the charter creating the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in 1934.  The Dora Maxwell Award, established in her honor, recognizes credit unions that have shown outstanding social responsibility and service to the community. Credit Unions are nominated on a state level, and winners then proceed to the national level to show their efforts for continuing the credit union industry philosophy of “People Helping People.”

League of Southeastern Credit Unions’ representatives were on hand to present the Dora Maxwell Award to New Horizons Credit Union Board of Directors, and commented, “The League is proud to present this award to such a deserving credit union.”  The award was presented during the Mobile Credit Union Chapter’s Monthly Dinner Meeting.

New Horizons Credit Union believes in giving back to the community.  For this reason, they have named their community efforts – Horizons Helping Hands.  Horizons Helping Hands is a New Horizons Credit Union employee team effort that raises funds for employee selected non-profit organizations through internal efforts such as jeans days. Several charities have benefited from Horizons Helping Hands endeavors.  Besides, Horizons Helping Hands, New Horizons Credit Union’s nomination for the Dora Maxwell Award was also based on participation with the following educational programs:

New Horizons Credit Union has been the title sponsor of the Hi-Q Academic Competition in Mobile, AL since 1986. The Hi-Q program is the oldest continuing academic quiz competition in the US, and New Horizons has been the sole sponsor for this competition since it expanded to Alabama in 1986. New Horizons CU partnered with the Mobile County Public School System because both share in the belief that Hi-Q is a very important part of quality education. New Horizons CU strongly believes that the Hi-Q competition encourages academic achievement, initiative, and good sportsmanship.Furthermore, by sponsoring an academic quiz competition we are giving high school students the opportunity to showcase and enrich their knowledge that will inevitably lead to higher college enrollment and a lower dropout rate for schools.

New Horizons Credit Union also proudly awards five, $1,000 scholarships each year to deserving high school seniors. New Horizons Credit Union forms a scholarship committee that reviews each application and chooses awardees based on several factors, with one of the main focuses being community service.

In response to receiving the Dora Maxwell Award, New Horizons CU Board Chairman, Linda Brown, commented, “We are so deeply honored to have received this award. “Many of these programs, we have been doing for years, and it is a great feeling to know that our efforts make a difference in people’s lives. This is what makes credit unions stand apart from other financial institutions.”

“New Horizons Credit Union’s President/CEO, Edith Franklin and Board of Directors Chairman – Linda Brown, are presented the LSCU Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility from LSCU Political Action & Grassroots Manager – Blake Westbrook.”
