Northwest Federal sees rising student debt as opportunity for education

Free college financing seminar aimed to demystify process, support members

HERNDON, VA (September 22, 2015)Northwest Federal Credit Union recently held a free college financing seminar, open to members and the public, providing financial education about one of the largest expenses facing families in the Washington D.C. metro area.

The credit union offers private loans through their partnership with Credit Union Student Choice, a company started by credit unions to give members a fair-value student loan option, but sees great importance in educating members about all options.

“Our members’ needs always come before profit. We believe it’s important for young adults to begin their careers with as little debt as possible, setting them up to succeed in achieving their lifelong financial goals,” said Senior Vice President of Lending, Jeff Bentley. “With that being said, if our members find they require private student loans, we want them to know that we’re here for them in that capacity as well. It’s all about serving our members with honesty and integrity, no matter their financial needs.”

Attendees learned ways to finance higher education before turning to private student loans, in a presentation that emphasized the importance of planning and legwork in securing scholarships, grants, and low-cost Federal loans.

“We’re concerned about the rising student debt crisis and want to do everything we can to educate our members and the public on all their options,” said Bentley. “With the price of college tuition growing faster than household incomes in this country, families need help understanding the process now more than ever.”

Northwest Federal holds the college financing seminar in March and September. All seminars are free and open to the public. Seats are reserved by signing up at www.nwfcu.org/seminars.
