Pacific Marine Credit Union gifts handicap-accessible van to local wounded warrior
OCEANSIDE, CA (June 8, 2017) — Pacific Marine Credit Union (PMCU) giftedan injured Camp Pendleton Marine with a modified van to easily accommodate her wheelchair.
The fully-equipped, handicap-accessible van was returned to the Credit Union after the previous owner passed away. Instead of selling or auctioning the vehicle, employees came up with a plan to donate the vehicle to a local wounded warrior who would benefit most from its upgrades.
The search for the bestbeneficiary of the van concluded when they found Staff Sergeant Danielle Pothoof through the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Pontoof was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds she sustained in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb detonated. Eventually, the injuries led to a necessary amputation below the knee of her left leg.
As she continues her life and career as an active duty Marine,Pontoofwill now own a vehicle capable of easily storing and transporting her wheelchair.
“Being able to give back to our military and honor the sacrifices they make for our country is absolutely wonderful, especially when it’s someone as deserving as Staff Sergeant Pothoof,” said Bill Birnie, President and Chief Executive Officer at Pacific Marine Credit Union. “I am proud to see our employees seeking these opportunities and fulfilling our mission to support the communities we serve.”
