Palmetto Citizens welcomes Congressman Clyburn
COLUMBIA, SC (July 3, 2023) — Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union recently hosted Congressman James Clyburn at their Downtown Columbia Office. Representative Clyburn was invited to speak with a group of their staff to share his expertise and perspective on a variety of issues.
Comprised mostly of staff from Palmetto Citizens’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Emerging Leaders Committees, as well as members of their Senior Leadership Team and Board, the group was able to hear from the Congressman on several personal and professional insights from his time serving the citizens of South Carolina.
“We were very honored to welcome Congressman Clyburn to Palmetto Citizens and share with him the work our entire team is doing to help make a positive impact on the communities we serve,” said Robert Dozier, Jr., Palmetto Citizens President and CEO. “We appreciated his time and advice as we look for new ways to even better serve the people and businesses here in the Midlands.”
Palmetto Citizens was recently certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by the U.S. Treasury, one of only 20 in South Carolina to receive this designation. As a CDFI, Palmetto Citizens has access to federal grants, tax credits, and bond programs they can use to reinvest in low-income and underserved communities of Midlands. During their visit with the Congressman, the group asked him for his guidance on ways the credit union could best put this certification to use in areas in the Midlands most in need.
They also discussed Palmetto Citizens’ ongoing support of Allen University, recently donating $115,000 to their restoration of the Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital and creation of their Institute of Civility. They sought the Congressman’s suggestions on additional ways the credit union can support the other Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Midlands, as well as their students and staff.
The Congressman also shared his insights on leadership, perseverance, service, as well as current legislative issues impacting credit unions and their members.
“Having Congressman Clyburn share his viewpoints from his esteemed career with many of our current and future leaders was remarkable,” added Dozier. “Providing them this opportunity to learn and be inspired by such a respected public servant will truly help us as we continue our work to best serve our members and communities.”
