Papale, inspiration for Disney’s “INVINCIBLE,” to kick off CCUL Annual Meeting

COLUMBIA, SC and RALEIGH, NC (January 30, 2014)—Put on your game face and get fired up to tackle any challenge! The Carolinas Credit Union League is proud to announce that Vince Papale, whose story inspired the Disney movie "INVINCIBLE,” will headline its 2014 Annual Meeting May 29-31 in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Papale’s life-changing story began in 1976, when Philadelphia Eagles' first year head coach Dick Vermeil invited locals to an open tryout in what some thought was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Papale—who at the time was 30 years old and a school teacher, part-time bartender, and Eagles season ticketholder—was encouraged by family and friends to take the chance.

Though he did not play college football, Papale was a track star who ran a 4.5 40-yard dash—a world-class time. Vermeil offered him a contract on the spot but as a walk-on Papale still had to make the team. He overcame tremendous odds to become the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL, eventually becoming a team captain and playing in the NFL for four years. He was named the best special teams’ player in the 75-year history of the Philadelphia Eagles in an online vote on the team’s website.

In his 2014 Annual Meeting session titled, "Make Your Team Special,” Papale will tell more of his story, sharing tips for reaching full potential while inspiring those in attendance to achieve heights never reached before.

Vince would go on to work as a broadcaster for eight years before becoming a marketing executive and special projects coordinator at Sallie Mae. In 2006 his life changed again, and his football story was adapted for the big screen with "INVINCIBLE," starring Mark Wahlberg.

"Not often can a person see a film made about their own life’s journey,” said Papale. "What’s even rarer is having that movie described as inspirational, motivational, and giving hope. There’s a feeling of intense pride and humility that, at times, is overwhelming.”

CCUL will announce further details and speakers in coming weeks and open online registration very soon. For now, credit unions planning to attend can reserve a variety of accommodations today through Embassy Suites online or by calling 800-876-0010 and using the group code "CCU.”
