Pen Air FCU joins local law enforcement in going on a “donut strike” to arrest hunger

PENSACOLA, FL (June 19, 2017) — The Pensacola Police Department (PPD) and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ESCO) are going on strike against their beloved donuts, and they need the community to help them arrest hunger by donating food to Manna the week of June 19 – 23!

“A donut strike plays into the clichéd depiction of a police officer, but knowing that 1 in 4 children got to bed hungry in our counties is definitely worth every effort to help.” said PPD Chief Tommi Lyter.

During that week, they vowed not to devour a single donut until until 2.5 tons (5,000 lbs.) of food has been donated to fight hunger in the local area. Once the goal has been reached, the teams will return to shamelessly devouring the glazed goodness that all police officers know and love.

“When we heard that Manna’s need was increasing for the summer months, we decided to do our part and put the donuts down for a few days” said ECSO Chief Chip Simmons.

Each day, the PPD and ESCO will announce a location, via their social media, accepting donations from 3 to 6 p.m. in order to hurry and end the strike.  You can also donate at any Escambia County branch location of Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union and Pen Air Federal Credit Union, as well as First City Church, Studer Group,  Krispy Kreme Donuts, Pensacola Country Club, Maynard’s Donut Co and Milestone Baptist Church.

Manna is a local, grassroots non-profit dedicated to fighting hunger in Escambia & Santa Rosa counties.  Their mission is to offer emergency food assistance, service the food-related needs of vulnerable populations, and engage the entire community in the fight against hunger.
